Correction

This story was corrected to note that Watjen will become chairman of the board and McKenney will join the board as a director.

Unum Group, one of Chattanoooga's largest employers, is getting new leadership.

CEO Tom Watjen, who has headed the insurer for a dozen years, will retire on April 1.

Richard "Rick" McKenney, who has been Unum's CFO for more than five years, will become the company's new CEO. McKenney, 46, also will become president of Unum and join its board of directors. A Tufts University graduate, he came to Unum from Sun Life Financial, where he was also CFO.

The company announced the leadership transition late this afternoon.

Watjen, 60, will become chairman, and intends to remain a director of the company through Unum's 2017 annual meeting.
