VW sales in U.S. off in February

Volkswagen of America's sales fell 5.1 percent in February over a year ago as dips were posted in all its models except the Golf.

Chattanooga-made Passat sales were off 9.8 percent in the month to 6,309 vehicles, the company reported today.

Jetta sales dropped 9.2 percent in February, while the Beetle fell 29.6 pecent, according the German automaker.

Golf sales jumped 137.8 percent on the recent introduction of the new model.

"We are pleased to see the positive customer and media acceptance of the Golf family...," said Mark McNabb, the company's chief operating officer, in a statement.

Total VW sales were 25,710 vehicles in February.

For the year, VW sales in the U.S. are down 2.75 percent compared to 2014.

VW is spending $600 million at its Chattanooga assembly plant to build a new sport utility vehicle to help drive sales. Production on the SUV is to start in late 2016, according to the company.
