A Chattanooga official said Tuesday no evidence has been uncovered that undocumented workers are helping build Volkswagen's plant expansion.

"We looked into it and didn't find any evidence of noncompliance," said City Engineer Bill Payne.

Last month, city Industrial Development Board member Jimmy Rodgers Jr. said he deals with a lot of people in the local construction industry and "there are a lot of rumblings" about workers who appear to be undocumented.

VW spokesman Scott Wilson said all contractors and subcontractors must abide by local, state and federal law. The automaker is undertaking a $900 million expansion to assemble a new sport utility vehicle at its Chattanooga plant by late next year.
