Chattanooga's trendy Southside neighborhood is getting a new co-working space called Workhorse.

The shared office space aimed at creative professionals will open Monday on the second floor of the Clearstory Building at 400 E. Main Street. It's founded by Alfonso Gómez- Arzola and Arne Heggestad, business partners who have a web development company called Small Batch.

They ran Small Batch from the first floor of the Clearstory Building, so when they heard a 1,000-square-foot space upstairs was available, they jumped on the chance to lease it for Workhorse.

"It's something we think there's a market for in Chattanooga," Heggestad said.

The space - inside a former office furniture warehouse - has high ceilings, lots of light and room for about 20 people, Gómez-Arzola said.

"You have extremely high ceilings," he said. "The light bounces around. It's really nice."

The space will offer shared work tables, lounging options and standing desks. Workhorse members will have access to WiFi, a private conference room for meetings, and a printer, copier and scanner. Plans start at just $15 for a day pass and multi-day memberships are available.

Workhorse is within walking distance from cafes, shops and restaurants, the business partners said. There's a Bike Chattanooga station two blocks west on Main Street, and the free CARTA Shuttle station is just a 10-minute walk away, they said.

During "beta week" from Jan. 2 through Jan. 6, anyone can use the Workhorse co-working space free of charge from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This will be the Southside's second co-working space; the pioneer is Society of Work, a business that's expanding to take up the entire sixth and seventh floors of the 10-story Edney Innovation Center at 11th and Market streets in the city's new Innovation District.

"I love Society of Work," Gómez-Arzola said.

Workhouse won't have some of the perks that Society of Work members can pay extra for - such as beer on tap and ice cream.

"I would say that we're different," Gómez-Arzola said. "We're certainly cheaper. We want to just focus on the things that will help you get your work done."

"When you're a freelancer, money is tight," he said. "We would rather offer you what you need - nothing more."
