The average retail price of gas in Chattanooga fell another 2.4 cents per gallon last week, the third consecutive week of declining fuel prices at local gas pumps.

Among the 170 gas outlets surveyed in Chattanooga by Gasbuddy.com, gas prices on Sunday averaged $2.05 per gallon. That was 18 cents per gallon below the U.S. average gas price of $2.23 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Chattanooga during the past week, prices Sunday were 11.5 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 6.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

"October is a time we all expect gas prices to decline," said Gregg Laskoski, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, noting that the price at the pump has declined an average of 20 cents per gallon during October over the past four years. "But this month has proven to be an exception with the national average still a few cents higher than where it was on Oct. 1 at $2.22. While the price increase of crude oil has stalled the expected price decrease for retail gasoline, problems at major refineries in Indiana, Texas, Louisiana and California have adversely impacted supply as well."

Laskoski noted that a recent Energy Information Administration report showed that U.S. refinery output at just 85.5 percent, the lowest level since January 22, 2015.

In Chattanooga, the cheapest prices for gas today are at service stations along Signal Mountain Road where five stations are selling regular gas at $1.92 per gallon.
