Test Drive: 2019 Hyundai Kona strikes a chord with millennials

Every time I get a Hyundai Kona for review, one of the millennials at work hits me up for my opinion on the sub-compact SUV.

"I like it," I'll say, honestly.

I even have a pet name for this youthful affection for a model that's more or less invisible to baby boomers. Depending on the color, to me they are either Snow Konas or Ice Cream Konas.

This week's tester, a Sunset Orange Kona Ultimate AWD, is definitely a Snow Kona. It looks so tasty in day-glo orange that you want to lick it; and it will go in the snow, to boot.

In fact, it's hard to not see the all-wheel-drive Kona as way for Hyundai to piggy-back on the success of the Subaru Crosstrek, another youth-oriented model. A smartly-styled compact with all-wheel-drive is the right formula for attracting outdoors-minded young-adults.

FAST FACTS

Model: 2019 Hyundai Kona Ultimate AWDExterior color: Sunset OrangeInterior color: BlackEngine: 1.6-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinderHorsepower: 175Transmission: Seven-speed, dual-clutch automaticFuel economy: 29 mpg highway, 26 mpg cityLocal Dealer: Long Hyundai, 6035 International DrivePrice (as tested): $30,070

The Ultimate with AWD is the top trim level for the Kona, a fact that's reflected in its $30,070 MSRP. Still, our tester delivers a lot of value when you consider that it comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, a sophisticated seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, leather seats, and 8-inch color touch screen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Konas are available locally at Long Hyundai, 6035 International Drive. When we checked the digital inventory late this week the dealership had three Konas in stock.

WHAT IS IT?

The Hyundai Kona Ultimate is a compact SUV with seating for five, nice exterior lines, a refined interior and long list of creature comforts.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

While our tester noses past $30,000, a base model SE lists for $21,195. The lower trims have a naturally aspirated (nonturbo) engine.

WHAT WE LIKED

The shapely sheet metal, firm bucket seats, simple buttons and dials, sharp navigation graphics and Infinity sound system.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

We didn't care for balky door latches that require you to exit the car before locking the doors when you are done driving. Also, the black interior absorbed Chattanooga's August heat like a thermal sponge. Also, while driving it takes the Kona a beat or two to gather itself.

DRIVING IMPRESSIONS

Its short wheel-base, light weight and fiesty engine make the Kona Ultimate a joy to drive. We didn't get to test the AWD on wet roads, but just knowing it's there is a comfort.

BOTTOM LINE

Judging from anecdotal reaction to our tester, the Kona is on the map with young drivers and has a promising sales future. Hyundai's 10-year (or) 100,000-mile powertrain warranty is a bonus.
