Business Digest: Wrigley awarded for pretreatment

Wrigley awarded for pretreatment

Chattanooga's wastewater department has recognized Wrigley Manufacturing Co., as this year's Pretreatment Excellence Award winner. The annual award is given by the city to a manufacturer that has efficiently operated and maintained their wastewater pretreatment system for process wastewater before it's discharged into city sewers. Wrigley has had no violations of their wastewater discharge permit in 2011 and so far in 2012, according to Rick Tate, the pretreatment supervisor for the city of Chattanooga's Department of Public Works' wastewater resoures division.

Wrigley's wastewater pretreatment system uses a pH neutralization system with acid and caustic chemical addition, a screening system to prevent discharge of excessive solids, and a spill prevention and slug control plan to ensure proper management of large quantities of granulated sugar, vegetable oil, flavorings and other ingredients used in the candy making process.
