Purchase party tonight considers new artwork for Hunter collection

Art lovers can get a look behind the curtain Saturday as a new acquisition is considered for the Hunter Museum of American Art.

A purchase party, scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at the Hunter, 10 Bluff View, will gather Friends of African American Art to help choose a work by a contemporary black artist to become part of the Hunter collection.

Friends of African American Art is a group formed by Bessie Smith Cultural Center and the Hunter for art lovers interested in preserving and showcasing works by black artists. Works will be purchased for both facilities. The goal is to acquire the first piece of art this month. Membership fees are used toward acquiring the works.

According to a news release, members enjoy a range of educational and social activities, including lectures, exhibition previews, collecting workshops and meetings with artists and other professionals in the arts.

Saturday's party is free to FAAA members, $25 for nonmembers. Only members of FAAA may vote on the purchase.

For more information on how to join, contact the membership department at the Hunter at 267-0968.
