Local artist Lee Glascock centers on "Terra" for a group of paintings featured on the front wall this month at In-Town Gallery.

The works are marked by an imaginative use of color and texture using acrylic paint on canvas.

Lee says the collection "was born from the inspiration I've gained from traveling through national and state parks, hiking along rivers and through canyons, climbing on rocks along the sandy shores of Nova Scotia and digging for gemstones in the mountains of North Carolina, all the while relishing the raw beauty of our Earth."

Works begin with spontaneity and move through constant revisions as layers of different colors are applied, leaving the land formations to reveal themselves.

"I've always loved experimenting with paint and exploring methods to create beautiful color, pattern and texture," the artist says. "I usually approach a painting without an outcome in mind. Through layering using different methods, some tried and true, as well as trying new things, the painting begins to take a direction and I develop it to completion."

Now immersed in acrylic mixed-media panting, Glascock also has pursued watercolor painting, china painting and jewelry making over the years.

"Terra" will be on view throughout January. An opening reception is scheduled Friday, Jan. 6.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 pm Monday through Saturday (until 8 p.m. on first Fridays), 1-5 p.m. Sundays.
