Ballet Magnificat, an internationally known ballet company headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, will present a free performance of the story of the prodigal son in Dalton, Georgia, on Friday night, Jan. 25, at ChristChurch Presbyterian.
Ballet Magnificat was founded in 1986 by Kathy Thibodeaux, a silver medalist at the second USA International Ballet Competition. The arts organization is dedicated to presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ through dance, and its ministry has grown to two touring companies that have performed across the United States as well as in more than three dozen countries around the world.
Friday night's performance, "Prodigal's Journey," is the company's interpretation of the biblical parable of the prodigal son found in Luke 15.
In this telling, life in a small town is shaken up when a husband suddenly forsakes his loving wife and daughter, leaving them in order to be free and search for fulfillment in his life. The heartbroken wife and daughter struggle to forgive him, yet eagerly await his return.
The journey that the husband thought would bring pleasure ends up only producing sorrow and regret. After reaching a dead end, he returns home to ask forgiveness from his family and is received with open arms.
This touching tale of forgiveness and restoration is set to classical ballet, jazz, modern and even some swing dance.
