NOTE: Tonight's Evening Shade concert featuring the Collins Brothers and Peter Rivera, former lead singer and drummer for Rare Earth, will take place at Arnold Memorial Elementary School at 6:30 p.m.
The event was moved from Johnston Park because of rain, according to a news release.
"The show always goes on," said Nancy Neal, vice president of communications for the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce. "While we cannot control the weather, we can continue to offer a wonderful evening of free music to our community in downtown Cleveland - just a few blocks from the outdoor venue."
"Where else can you enjoy a free concert of this caliber on a Friday evening that would cost you $50 tomorrow night in Atlanta?" concert organizer Kyle Elrod said.
Concertgoers are urged to park on the gymnasium side of the school, located at 473 8th St., NW, in Cleveland.
Peter Rivera, the original drummer and lead vocalist on all of Rare Earth's biggest hits, will appear on the Evening Shade stage in Johnston Park in Cleveland, Tenn., tonight at 6:30.
With Rivera on drums and lead vocals, Rare Earth sold more than 25 million records. Among the band's biggest hits are "Get Ready," "I'm Losing You," "Born To Wander," "Hey Big Brother" and "I Just Want To Celebrate."
"Rivera has been called the premier rock drummer and vocalist of the '70s," said Kyle Elrod, event organizer and member of the Allied Arts Council of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce, the series' sponsor. "He's now offering an unplugged acoustic rendition of his Motown hits that caters to smaller venues."
Rivera will be joined by Joe Brasch and Danny McCollim.
Opening for Rivera are the Collins Brothers, Joe and Cory, with an acoustic set.
"This is a great time for families and members of the community to gather in downtown Cleveland for an evening of wonderful music," Elrod said. "In the aftermath of the tornados and in the midst of the continued cleanup, we're glad we can offer something free to our community to lift the spirits of those whose lives continue to be touched by the recent devastation."
Johnston Park is bounded by Inman, Ocoee, First and Broad streets, with access from Inman.
