Several Chattanooga doctors will put their healing hands to other uses Saturday, March 1, for Med Rock: Battle of the Physician Bands.
Competing are six local acts, each with a member of the medical community performing. They are: Double Trouble, Bluegrass Pharaohs, Dr. Brett Sanders, BandAnna, Pump Daddies and Still Runnin'. Audience vote will determine the winner of the night's performances at the Hush Hush Club.
According to Kristi Bonvallet, president of the Chattanooga Hamilton County Medical Society Alliance, Med Rock was inspired by a similar event in Knoxville.
"Our medical community has a wealth of talented musicians, so we knew we could stage an event that would be amazing," she says.
The Medical Society Alliance is a sponsor of the event, along with Memorial Hospital, Medical Foundation of Chattanooga and several businesses and practices. The alliance is an organization of physician spouses whose mission is to improve the health and welfare in the community.
Members of the organization are actively involved with the Battered Women's Shelter, a program of the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults, as well as with a national abuse prevention program called Hands Are Not for Hitting.
Med Rock will establish a scholarship fund for college-bound kids of health-care workers.
"Patient care is really a team effort," says Anita Headrick, chairwoman of the event. "This scholarship is the medical community's way of showing appreciation to the many nurses, lab techs, therapists, etc. who are such an important part of the overall health-care team."
The $25 ticket includes entertainment, complimentary wine and beer. The Terra Nostra food truck will sell its specialties, with 10 percent of sales going to the scholarship fund. Audience votes cost $1 apiece.
Event coordinators say fewer than 100 tickets are available, and they may be purchased only online.
