One manages a retail car lot, one's a landscaper, another is a pipefitter and a fourth is in construction. Only one is a full-time musician.

But together, the guys moonlight as Backwater Still, a popular local cover band whose music crosses multiple genres, shaped by their Southern roots.

"If you took Southern rock, country, blues and bluegrass and squeezed real hard, Backwater Still would be the juice that runs out," describes Shannon Dunn, guitar and lead vocals, of their sound.

"We cover everything from Merle Haggard to Otis Redding. We don't get stuck in one genre. You might hear 'Workin' Man Blues' at the beginning of a set and Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' at the end.'"

Backwater Still will headline its first show at Revelry Room on Saturday, June 10, at 9 p.m., although Dunn says they have played there before opening for another act.

In addition to Dunn, Backwater Still includes Terry Crumley, vocals; Daniel Fowler, bass; Ray Haggard, guitar and vocals; and David Daugherty, drums.

Dunn says he and Haggard have played music together since they were teens. He and Crumley began performing together in 1997. Haggard, Fowler and Dunn were all students at Ridgeland High School at the same time. Fowler joined the group about a decade ago.

"Over the years the formula has been tweaked, but we keep the same recipe. There have been breaks when we'd take a few years off and then get back together and do some projects. We put the name together for a 2003 Riverbend show."

If you can't make it to the Revelry Room on Saturday, catch Backwater Still next weekend. They'll be at Main Street's Friday Night Live in Summerville, Ga., on June 16 and at Dumpy's in Ocoee, Tenn., on June 17.

Josh Driver and The Dixieland Playboys will open for Backwater Still on Saturday.
