When Insane Clown Posse emerged from Detroit's underground music scene in the 1990s, the world had yet to see the impact that the hardcore hip-hop style of these two artists would have on mainstream music.

Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) were shunned by mainstream music players like MTV, banned from radio airwaves and yanked from the shelves of conventional retail outlets for their horrorcore lyrics. It appeared ICP was destined for failure.

Instead, the duo built a following of fans called "Juggalos" and smashed music industry expectations.

Insane Clown Posse brings its style of hardcore hip-hop to The Signal on Sunday night, June 9. Opening will be Rittz, Mushroomhead, Mac Lethal, Kissing Candice and Genki Genki Panic.

ICP introduced supernatural- and horror-themed lyrics as a means of distinguishing itself. The duo founded independent record label Psychopathic Records, and produced and starred in the feature films "Big Money Hustlas" and "Big Money Rustlas." They formed their own professional wrestling federation, Juggalo Championship Wrestling.

The duo has earned two platinum and five gold albums. Their songs include "Hokus Pokus," "Halls of Illusions," "Boogie Woogie Wu," "Under the Moon" and "Juggalo Homies."
