A softball game pitting the Chattanooga Police Department against the Chattanooga Fire Department may finally get played today.
Handcuffs vs. Hoses: The Battle Between Chattanooga's Finest was postponed from June because of bad weather. The game has been rescheduled for 11:30 a.m. today at AT&T Field, 201 Power Alley.
The lunch-hour timing follows the Chattanooga Lookouts' practice of "businessman's special" games to draw in downtown workers to watch a few innings of fun on the field.
Proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater Chattanooga. Admission will be a suggested donation of $4, to be dispersed to United Way agencies, or school supplies for the organization's Stuff the Bus campaign.
"We are encouraging nonprofit organizations, their volunteers and the public to take a much deserved afternoon off and enjoy a great game," said Eva Dillard, president of United Way Chattanooga.
The two-month delay in play has only given the two teams more time to covet the bragging rights of a win.
"Our team has been dusting off our trophy shelf since June," said Fire Chief Randy Parker. "We think it will fit quite nicely at the station."
"There isn't a trophy for second place," countered Chattanooga Police Chief Bobby Dodd. "We're going to have the fire department handcuffed within a couple of innings," he said.
Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Rick Smith, a former University of Tennessee pitcher, will throw out the first pitch.
