National Trails Day is Saturday

Blue skies are always a good excuse to get outside, and Saturday's sunny forecast has the added incentive of National Trails Day activities.

Several organizations around the region will mark the day with an assortment of hikes, walks, runs, bike rides and horse rides.

Hike/bike/run to Hidden Lake

-- When: 8-10 a.m.

-- Where: Hidden Lake at Enterprise South Nature Park off Volkswagen Drive.

-- Description: Hamilton County Parks and Recreation will provide first 250 participants with bottled water at the beginning of the hike/bike ride, and those reaching the Hidden Lake picnic area will receive Enterprise South Nature Park water bottles.

Hike on Black Mountain Trail

-- When: 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. CDT.

-- Where: Meet at Trinity Tabernacle Church, 2028 South Main (Highway 127 South), Crossville, Tenn. (1.5 miles south of Cumberland Medical Center).

-- Description: Moderate 5-mile hike with Tennessee Trails Association, Plateau Chapter, from the top of Black Mountain to Windless Cave and then to Cox Valley Road includes beautiful overlooks of Grassy Cove. Bring lunch and water. Registration required.

Hike the Cumberland Trail

-- Where: Cumberland Trail in Sale Creek. From Highway 27, turn west onto Leggett Road; go 1/4 mile to lower trailhead; turn left into parking lot.

-- Description: Tennessee Trails Association, Soddy-Daisy chapter, leads hike and provides water, sports drinks and cookies.

Collins Gulf hike/walk

-- Where: Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.

-- Description: Join Friends of South Cumberland State Park for a 6-mile hike in Savage Gulf State Natural Area from Collins West trailhead past Suter Falls to Horsepound Falls and back. Bring water, snacks and a camera.

Trail cleanup day

-- Where: Harrison Bay State Park, Harrison.

-- Description: Friends of Harrison Bay State Park coordinates maintenance on 4.5-mile bike trail, including clearing storm damage, replacing markers. Bring gloves, clippers, water, snacks, bug spray and sturdy shoes.

Lula Lake Trails Day

-- Description: Lula Lake Land Trust hosts three events in different segments of the property: hiking/running trail maintenance; equestrian trail riding work day and building a segment of a bike trail. Tools and lunch provided for bike trail workers; may be provided for other two.

Sunset Rock Trail Day
