Retirement community hosting fall carnival

A fall carnival and events marking Active Aging Week are scheduled this weekend at Creekside at Shallowford, an independent senior living community at 7511 Shallowford Road.

Active Aging Week is a national observance promoted by the International Council on Active Aging. At Creekside, seniors can take part in a trivia night at 7 tonight, learn healthy eating habits while sampling chef-prepared appetizers at 2 p.m. Saturday and play beanbag baseball at 2 p.m. Sunday. Light refreshments will be included in all gatherings.

The fall carnival, set for 10 a.m.-noon Saturday is a communitywide celebration. It will feature a cake walk, door prizes for adults and kids, a pie throw, beanbag toss, soda pop toss, the Alhambra Shriners, kids face-painting and hairstyling, duck pond and balloon animals.

Seniors will be able to have their blood oxygen level tested, and Jim Ricketts and Crystle Elam will perform live music.

"We are raising money for a new computer for our residents, so we will be selling popcorn, lemonade and caramel apples," said enrichment coordinator Anissa Harrison.

"We want our residents to participate, obviously, but we want them to bring their grandkids, too," she said. "We want the community to come."

All events are free.
