The event that took the top spot in Flea Market Style magazine’s readers poll of favorite miles-long yard sales returns this weekend.

The World’s Longest Yard Sale, a frenzy of roadside buyers and sellers — and the unsuspecting travelers who get caught in the wake — takes place today through Sunday, Aug. 1-4. The route stretches along 690 miles of Highway 127 from Addison, Mich., to Gadsden, Ala., as well as the Lookout Mountain Parkway in the Chattanooga area.

Below the Mason-Dixon line, scorching heat, stifling humidity and threats of pop-up thunderstorms are the usual companions for shoppers. But braving the elements is all part of finding the bargains at the yard sale, now in its 27th year.

Vendors set up in yards, fields and wide pull-offs, offering treasures that range from priceless to worthless, depending on a shopper’s point of view. Sales usually start at first light and last until the heat or rain thins the crowd.

At press time, WRBC-TV forecasters were calling for a chance of scattered storms and high temperatures ranging from upper 80s to low 90s in the Chattanooga area.
