'Chicken Soup' reading shines light on dementias

The Alzheimer's Association will present a book reading and discussion of "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Living With Alzheimer's & Other Dementias" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at Barnes & Noble, 2100 Hamilton Place Blvd.

The book, a collection of inspirational essays, stories and poems from people affected by the disease -- whether as a patient, caregiver, friend or family member -- is meant to raise awareness of the Alzheimer's epidemic and provide comfort to those dealing with it. All royalties from sales go to the Alzheimer's Association.

Among those reading excerpts will be Kelle Riley, a Hixson resident whose "Always a Mother" is one of the 101 stories within the book. Local experts from the Alzheimer's Association will be on hand to offer advice and insight during the discussion to follow.

According to the association, Alzheimer's is the nation's sixth-leading cause of death and the only cause of death among the Top 10 in the U.S. without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression.

"This collection of personal stories will offer families who are facing a diagnosis of Alzheimer's comfort and encouragement in each stage of the disease," says Madison Vincent, chapter communications manager. "We are grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness for the book and our organization while meeting people within the community who may be dealing with a diagnosis."
