Campaigns for pets during the holidays

Three area animal-welfare agencies have announced promotions taking place over the next few weeks.

* Dec. 1-2: Wally's Friends, 155 Unaka Street, Red Bank, will offer a special fee of $10 for spaying/neutering of pit bulls and feral cats as part of its "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" campaign. These two groups of animals "are caught in our human web of social injustice," according to the organization's website, wallys friends.com. 877-9966

* Dec. 4: McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center, 4500 North Access Road, will offer pet photos with Santa Claws (cats and dogs) 11 a.m.-3 p.m. by Artist's Eye Photography. Appointments are not necessary. The photo fee is $20, and you will receive a CD of your pictures. Proceeds benefit the homeless animals at the McKamey Center. 305-6500.

* Through Dec. 31: The Humane Educational Society, 212 N. Highland Park Ave., is asking area residents to participate in "Home 4 the Holidays," an adoption drive to find homes for orphaned animals during the holiday season. Shelters throughout the United States and the Helen Hayward Animal Center are partnering in the drive, which has a goal of 350,000 homes, making it the largest adoption drive in history. 624-5302.

* Through winter: HES is also holdings its Cold-Weather Blanket Drive. Donations of blankets, bedding, rugs and towels may be made 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday. 624-5302.
