Damien Jurado is the model of a dedicated, hardworking musician. Early on, in the mid-90s, he built a following in and around Seattle with his then lo-fi folk sound, garnering the attention of Sub Pop Records. After a handful of releases from Sub Pop, in 2003 he started working with Indiana-based label Secretly Canadian, which has proved to be a long-lasting bond.
Overall, since his introduction to the music world, he has released a combination of around 30 albums or EPs. Throughout the years, Jurado has firmly established himself as a mainstay in the folk and singer-songwriter realm of the music world. But due to his more recent collaboration with musician/producer Richard Swift (The Shins, The Black Keys), it seems he has really honed in on his signature sound, especially on his last two albums. This sound can be best described as a spacey, ethereal blend of folk and psychedelic rock. Complicated as this might sound, it would be hard to believe that anyone would not like his music.
For the deeper music fan, his music has enough depth and layers to enjoy a different sound or aspect of the song each time you listen. But at the same time, his music is pleasing and melodic enough that it can play in the background of a party or event and not overpower anything. Perfect examples of this can be found in songs like Silver Timothy, Exit 353, QACHINA and Walrus.
After the release of his newest 17-track album Visions of Us on the Land in March of this year, Jurado continues his rise to popularity and it is exciting to have him add Chattanooga as a destination on his current tour. Even more exciting, he chose to perform at JJ's Bohemia, named one of the 100 Greatest American Music Venues by Consequence of Sound earlier this year. The pair should make for a great night of live music on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
