• It's pretty amazing how television viewing habits have changed for a lot of us.

Growing up, we watched basically whatever came on one of the networks. We were at their mercy. If your antenna was worth a darn, you got one or two of the PBS stations as well. You pretty well knew the schedule by heart and developed an internal clock that went off when one of your favorite shows was about to come on. A kid could be in mid-swing in a pickup baseball game and if it was time for "Batman," he was gone.

If you missed a show, it was gone, seemingly forever. Now if you miss it, you can watch it online, or catch the rebroadcast later, or DVR it and watch it when you want, without commercials.

But what really has changed are the marathon viewings of shows we'd never heard of before or favorites from the past. It has pretty much eliminated the cliffhanger endings and the sense of anticipation you got from tuning in tomorrow, same Bat channel.

Some of these are new shows that we've discovered, and some are classics. Discovered is probably too strong a word since it's hard to lay claim to unearthing something that ran for multiple seasons and appears magically on a Suggestions For You playlist.

We started watching the first season of "Ironside" the other day, and the other night we watched something called "The Mothers-in-Law" from the late '60s. What a bizarre show. It looks like a "Laugh-I"/"Make Room for Daddy" mashup.

Of course, it's because of this new technology that I stumbled across "Justified," "House of Cards" and "Orange Is the New Black," which are all great.

• Local musicians, take note, there is a new place to play in town.

Actually, it's not new at all, but it is going to begin offering local bands a place to play.

Giggles Grill inside The Comedy Catch is looking to promote and produce shows Friday and Saturday nights.

Owner Michael Alfano has a whole list of ideas related to the plan, and he's also interested in using the larger Comedy Catch room on off nights. So if you are interested in playing there, give him a call. 423-622-2233.
