Caving, hiking at Cloudland Canyon park

Looking to get outside this weekend? G3 Outfitters (Georgia Girl Guides) will offer hiking today and two cave trips Saturday at Cloudland Canyon State Park in Rising Fawn, Ga.

* Today: The hike, starting at 10 a.m., is a full day on the Bear Creek Trail. Participants will meet in the Backcountry parking lot and will need to bring a daypack with lunch, water, a change of socks (the trail crosses the creek) and trekking poles if you have them. Cost is $20. The hike will be repeated Dec. 30.

* Saturday: A Wild Cave Tour starts at 10 a.m., and an Introduction to Caving Trip follows at 2 p.m. Both will be repeated at the same times Dec. 31.

The Wild Cave Tour is a two-hour adventure suitable for families, groups and adventure seekers who want to get muddy, wet and climb on rocks. Participants must be able to crawl, stoop, balance, climb and wade into cold water. Cost is $30; it's open to ages 6 and older. In January, it will be offered on a regular schedule of 10 a.m. Saturdays and 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

Introduction to Caving is for beginners unsure of the underground environment. Guides will direct participants (ages 6 and up) through a crawl space, point out cave formations and cave critters, and lead them in an underground river. Cost is $20. In January, it will be offered on a regular schedule at 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Coming in January: Also scheduled is a First Day Hike to the waterfalls on Jan. 1. Participants will meet at 1 p.m. at the Interpretive Center. Cost is $5 per person.

Spelunkers can take part in a Wild Cave Adventure, a four-hour outing for ages 12 and up, at 10 a.m. Sundays and Wednesdays at a cost of $50. Groups can schedule two-hour, private adventures in the cave for $300.
