Wine and cheese for historic cause in LaFayette

Two foods that get better with age figure into a project raising funds for historic preservation in LaFayette Ga.

Proceeds from a wine-and-cheese tasting scheduled Thursday at One-Eleven restaurant will go toward the cost of restoring six historic markers.

The markers - five in front of Chattooga Academy and one at Fort Cumming - were erected by the state historical society in the 1950s, according to Catherine Edgemon of the city of LaFayette's Main Street and Economic Development Department.

LaFayette's Historic Preservation Commission and Downtown Development Authority are working with the Walker County Historical Society to raise funds for the restoration, she said.

The cost to replace the posts and to restore the markers, which will include repainting the signs, is $4,500. A Wal-Mart Foundation grant, a recent Pizza Hut fundraiser and donations from civic groups and individuals have raised nearly $2,750.

The tasting will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the restaurant at 111 LaFayette Square downtown.

Tickets cost $15 each, $25 for two. They may be purchased at the restaurant as well as these LaFayette businesses: Elite Custom Paint and Body, Bank of LaFayette, Cohutta Banking Co., Sew Cute, The Bouquet Shop and Debbi's Flowers and Favors.
