ROSSVILLE: Student honored for bravery

Eighth-grader Dakota Nation was honored by the City of Rossville Tuesday night for his bravery. The Rossville Middle School student was presented a plaque at a ceremony held in his honor at the fire department.

Shortly after 6 a.m. on Feb. 20, Dakota was awakened by his dog barking and went outside to find his neighbor's house fully engulfed in flames. The youngster pulled Steve McDaniel, 54, from the burning home and called 911. He then covered Mr. McDaniel with blankets until more help arrived.

Mr. McDaniel was recovering from hip surgery and was reportedly crawling on his hands and knees when Dakota rescued him.

Dakota's family was joined by Rossville Mayor Johnny Baker, Public Safety Director Sid Adams, members of the city fire department and City Council members at the special presentation.
