Families are hub of free event May 8

A full day of fun and family activities is planned for the fourth annual HubFest May 8, but it is moms who will take center stage.

"It's just a way to meet your neighbors and honor mothers and celebrate Mother's Day," said volunteer coordinator Pat Eaker, who is still looking for people to help with the completely free event which normally draws at least 1,000 visitors to Heritage Park.

With families, and especially moms, at the center of the festival, children will have the opportunity to hand-make broaches or jewelry, carve soap or pot plants in honor of their loving leading ladies. Several contests such as "mom with the most kids present" and "youngest/oldest mom" will offer prizes from Lancome makeup to massages.

"We're giving out spectacular prizes," said event chair Sabrena Turner. A wide variety of door prizes will also be available to everyone.

Inflatables, including a bungee jumping one for older children, pony rides and face painting will add to the fair-type atmosphere. Turner said much attention was paid this year to making sure older kids would have fun too. Rolling video games will also be available for some play time.

A full lineup of entertainment is planned during the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event, featuring local performers from singing sensations to schools of dance. Artwork from area students will be on display inside Heritage House.

Food will be available for purchase from local nonprofits - the only cost aside from anything bought from the local vendors who will set up shop.

"I would commend our local small businesses and vendors for being so active in the community and wanting to participate in an event like this," said Turner. "We have been challenged with the economy a lot more this year than last year. Each year we're striving to improve. Working with a fabulous committee we always come up with exciting, innovative ideas to make it different."
