Breakfast is my favorite meal. Eggs, bacon, grits, greens, scones, cereal, pancakes - I cannot think of one recipe that I do not love.
I spent a lot of time - too much time, really - thinking about my affection for breakfast foods. Crepes? Love. Biscuits? Love. Pastries? Duh.
When I could not think of any other foods to list, I started to wonder what other cultures consider their morning-meal staples. I did a little research, and here is a quick taste of what I found:
China: Fried dough sticks served with warm soy milk
Germany: Fresh bread, cold meats, cheese, butter and jam
Italy: Brioche and cappuccino
Japan: Miso soup, white rice and pickled vegetables
Mexico: Chilaquiles or huevos racheros
South Africa: Hot cereal or corn-based porridge
Sweden: Open-faced sandwich topped with fish or cold cuts, veggies, cheese, and mayonnaise.
Yup, I'm a big fan of all those, too. Apparently my love of breakfast transcends continents.
