The GBI is assisting Middle Georgia authorities in an investigation of an accidental shooting that left a 6-year-old boy dead.

About 7:55 p.m. Monday, the Fort Valley Department of Public Safety was dispatched to a shots fired call at the Indian Oaks apartments, authorities said in a statement.

When officers got to the scene, they found 6-year-old Fiya Hollis, who "was reported to have been accidentally shot," the department said.

Fiya was taken Peach County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Fiya's family told police the child was home with his 10- and 13-year-old siblings at the time of the shooting, according to Channel 2 Action News.

They said he was playing with a gun he found in a living room drawer, the television station reported.

Neighbors told Channel 2 the child's mother was not home.

Fort Valley is about 103 miles south of downtown Atlanta.
