The Humane Educational Society is gearing up for its 11th Paws in the Park fundraising event on Oct. 9 at Baylor School.

Staff and volunteers will be participating in a fundraising party Aug. 18 to finalize details of the event, said Guy Bilyeu, Humane Education Society director.

"We are looking for volunteers and they can come to the party," he said, noting that it will be held at Weezie's Way, the Humane Education Center at HES. Those interested in volunteering should call Jeanine Cloyd at 624-5302, ext. 228, or e-mail prior to Aug. 18.

Money raised at Paws in the Park is earmarked for the "Getting to Zero" program, Bilyeu said.

"Getting to Zero has been extremely successful. Since 2007, we have not had to euthanize an animal that is treatable, adoptable or trainable," he said.

The humane society sends animals through PetSmart's "Rescue Waggin''' program to shelters that do not have an animal overpopulation problem, Bilyeu said.

"We also work closely with the Atlanta Humane Society and local and national rescue groups. Through these programs we have been able to lower the number of animals coming into our shelter from 8,000 two years ago to 4,000 this year," he said.

Area residents are encouraged to bring their families and canine pals to the event where they can participate contests for best costume, fastest eater and most passionate kisser. There will also be an owner/dog look-alike contests. Vendor displays, agility shows and raffles also will be featured.

Admission ranges from $15 to $50. Call 624-5302 for more information.
