The area's senior athletes are gearing up for the Chattanooga District Senior Olympics on May 2-7 in locations across the Chattanooga area.

This year's Senior Olympics will feature swimming, basketball free throw, bowling, volleyball, track and field, pickleball, tennis, horseshoes, table tennis, softball throw, softball, ballroom dancing, 5K run, cycling, golf, power walk, shuffleboard, badminton, basketball, weightlifting and racquetball.

The games are open to anyone who is 50 or older and lives in Tennessee. Residents of Alabama or Georgia who live within 30 miles of the Hamilton County/Marion County Tennessee state line also are eligible to participate, said event spokeswoman Michelle Turner, from Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries. Participants who are 49 years old are eligible to participate if their 50th birthday occurs before Dec. 31, 2011.

The Chattanooga District Senior Olympics will begin with a torch relay through downtown Chattanooga on May 2, Turner said. The relay will begin at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors building at 250 E. 10th Street at 11 a.m. and end at the First Tennessee Pavilion, where the opening ceremony will begin at noon.

Congratulations to Natalie Blackwell, member of the Nancy Ward chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who received the 2010 Award for Outstanding Junior Member.

Regent Pam McConnell presented the award in recognition of Natalie's active involvement in the programs and projects of the chapter.

The award is presented yearly to a junior member, one who is under the age of 35, who epitomizes the beliefs and standards of the DAR.
