Off the Couch: Turner concert benefits Ringgold

BARRY COURTER: Lisa, that guy that sounds like Scotty McCreery is coming to Ringgold to croon a little and raise a little money for the Ringgold High School band and athletic programs. There is also a pretty good concert on Wednesday at Rhythm & Brews. The wonderfully named The Cleverlys will be there playing bluegrass versions of pop songs like Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl."

LISA DENTON: Yep, I think "Your Man" might have become a nationwide drinking game during "American Idol." Hear Scotty sing "Baby lock them doors"; do a shot. I had to restock the liquor cabinet by week two.

Of course, if you're going to pattern yourself after somebody, you could do a lot worse than Josh Turner. I've been a fan of his beautiful bass voice since his first hit in 2003, "Long Black Train." And how fun was that "Firecracker" video he filmed at Tennessee-Alabama Fireworks in Kimball back in 2007?

From all accounts, Turner is a great guy, and the Thursday show will do a lot to get Ringgold's young musicians and athletes back on their feet. (You can read more about it in Susan Pierce's story on this page.)

BARRY: "Baby lock them doors" is a great country lyric that I'm sure is still being repeated in households everywhere. Simple and to the point. I've used it at home, but I somehow end up on the wrong side of the door.

LISA: Maybe it's the Bobby Goldsboro hair that's throwing it off.

BARRY: You saying I need a haircut? Probably right.

LISA: Maybe you'd have better luck singing a Cleverlys song. I have to say I'm intrigued by The Cleverlys. They're the first trio of five I'm aware of. But however you count them up, they have an interesting take on bluegrass music.

BARRY: The Cleverlys are unusual in a lot of ways, but they are a lot of fun and they are pretty good pickers on top of being funny. You can check out them on
