Music to soothe the savage tabby

What kind of music do dogs like? Which tunes are the cat's meow?

A contest sponsored by the Humane Educational Society of Chattanooga is seeking answers to those questions. Music lovers are asked to record their favorite soothing music for animals housed in the shelter and submit the tracks on a CD.

According to a news release, the Humane Society recently installed speakers throughout the shelter.

"Studies have shown music and calming sounds help with the stress a dog or cat feels within a shelter," the release said. "Dogs bark less and are more relaxed when people visit the shelter. Visitors stay longer and spend more time with animals, so more may be adopted."

The contest's first-place winner will receive a couples massage and dinner for two; second-place prize is a dinner and movie for two, and the third-place winner will receive champagne and chocolates.

The contest rules: No hard rock or rap; mail or hand-deliver the CD to the shelter at 212 N. Highland Park Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404 by March 17. You should include your name, address, phone number and email address on the envelope, and your name, phone and email on the CD. Winners will be contacted by March 31.
