Atchley receives university award

Heidi Fawn Atchley of Trenton, Ga., has been awarded the Cora Anderson Hill Award from Brenau University.

The award is given annually to the student with the highest grade-point average in the spring graduating class. It is named in memory of a Brenau alumna who had a distinguished career in journalism and public service.

Atchley graduated with a perfect 4.0. She never made less than an A in any course during her four years at Brenau, according to a university news release.

The daughter of Lisa and Trent Atchley, the award recipient is a member of Kappa Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies. She shared the Hill Award with Marjorie Uys, an accounting major from Gainesville, Ga.

Scholarships awarded

Three area students were awarded scholarships to Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

Keylee Jones of Chattanooga and Meghan Powers of Cleveland, Tenn., received Denison Founders Scholarships.

Mariko Thel of Chattanooga was awarded the Tyree/Parajon Scholarship.

Hammontree wins PBS award

Hannah Grace Hammontree, a kindergartner from Cohutta, Ga., is among winners of the national PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest.

First, second and third places were selected from entries in grades K-3 divisions. Hannah won first place in the kindergarten division for "The Elephant Ballerina."

The PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest is designed to promote the advancement of children's reading skills through hands-on original work. Winners were chosen from thousands of submissions representing 63 participating PBS stations across the country.
