Berry students win seats in Georgia All-College Band
Berry College in Rome, Ga., has eight students selected to play in the All-College Band. The band performs this weekend at the Georgia Music Educators Association conference in Savannah.
Berry students competed with music students from several Georgia universities and colleges and tied for the most students selected from one school.
The Berry students are Jarod Holland, principal chair clarinet; Katie Stuck and Kathy Stuvick, clarinet; Joe Vidalez, John Heidbreder, Matthew Soares and Everett Reiff, trumpet; and Ahmad Pruitt, trombone.
Brewer wins first in art show
Southeast Whitfield High School student Olivia Brewer won first place and $100 for her piece "The Cottage," which was included in an exhibition at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega.
The show displayed two-dimensional art by regional artist-educators and their students.
The juror was Atlanta artist Polly Neal, who selected 35 works for the exhibition.
Woodall to head Georgia education council
Berry College staff member Rick Woodall has been elected president of the Georgia Education Advancement Council for 2013.
Woodall has served on the GEAC board of directors since 2007, including chairing the group's 2012 annual conference. He also led planning efforts for the 2008 summer conference hosted by Berry.
The 14-member board provides direction for the statewide organization, founded in the early 1970s to foster professional advancement for Georgia's college and university personnel.
A 1993 graduate of Berry, Woodall serves the college as director of campaign promotions and advancement communications.
Hyatt named to First Families of Gilmer
Melinda Beth Hyatt and Eurilla Hyatt were among 39 new members inducted into the First Families of Gilmer County program. The induction was sponsored by the Gilmer County Genealogical Society Inc.
The purpose of the First Families program is to honor pioneers who settled in Gilmer County by 1840 and recognize their descendants.
Sawyer takes Pokémon titles
Chattanoogan Jonah Sawyer has won two Pokémon Trading Card championships.
Sawyer took first place in the junior division at the Duluth Pokémon City Championships. He then took first place in the junior division competition in St. Louis and earned the title of Winter Regional Champion. With that win, he received a travel award to represent the Southeast at the 2013 Pokemon U.S. National Championship in Indianapolis this summer.
Thetford's artwork in New Jersey show
Works by local artist Daryl Thetford are featured in Persona, an exhibition at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery on the campus of College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, N.J.
The exhibition examines the externalization of the "psychological self" in painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, photography and video.
Persona includes work by 32 artists from 10 states. It will be on view through April 14.
