About Park(ing) Day

Park(ing) Day was created in 2005 by a San Francisco based art and design studio, ReBar, with the hope of encouraging communities to rethink the way streets are used and reinforce the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure to promote healthy, vibrant and walkable urban areas.

About River City Co.

River City Co. is the economic development engine for Downtown Chattanooga. Through its work to cultivate and advocate for a vibrant and healthy downtown, River City Company stimulates the community's economic, social and cultural growth.

Metered parking spots will once again become mini-parks on Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate Chattanooga's ninth Park(ing) Day.

Civic groups, businesses and individuals are invited to participate in this free event by creating a temporary mini-park filled with interaction, conversation and fun, according to a River City Co. news release.

"Park(ing) Day is way for the community to create more public space for a day and really showcase how precious this shared open space in our downtown is," states Amy Donahue, Director of Marketing and Communication for River City Co. "This event is a great way to exhibit the creative, unique and inspiring people who live, work and play in our city."

In 2015, 60 parklets were created in Chattanooga. Parklets included yoga classes, carnival games, jam sessions, theatrical performances, dance performances, live drawing, poetry readings, coworking space, a makeup booth, a massage station, dart matches, a puppy petting park and more.

Park(er)s with their respective parklet ideas are required to register prior to the day's event through River City Co., and the registration deadline is Sept. 7. To register, call River City Company at 423-265-3700 with your name, organization (if applicable), phone number and planned activity or fill out the Park(ing) Day Participant Form online at www.rivercitycompany.com.
