House explosion reported in Calhoun, Ga.

CALHOUN, Ga. -

CALHOUN, Ga. - Calhoun fire officials don't believe anyone was home when a three-story house exploded on Saddle Mountain Drive this afternoon.

A Lt. Puckett with the Calhoun Fire Department said 80 percent of the homes in the subdivision east of Interstate 75 were damaged in the blast.

The house where the blast occurred is "down to the ground," he said.

Witnesses reported the explosion was heard as far away as Adairsville.

No information was immediately available on the cause of the explosion.

Lt. Puckett said five pieces of city fire equipment and three county trucks are still on the scene.

Media has been kept out of the cul-de-sac neighborhood, but witnesses said a small amount of smoke still is visible above the trees in the wooded neighborhood.

Maps show the home is in a cul-de-sac to the east of Interstate 75 off Lovers Lane in Calhoun.
