Ex-candidate convicted of murder seeks tips

ATLANTA - The family of a former candidate for California governor who was sentenced to life in prison for the 1996 slaying of an Atlanta businessman is launching a billboard campaign seeking new evidence in his case.

Scott Davis was convicted of murder in December 2006 in the death of David Coffin Jr. He says he is innocent and a billboard near Atlanta City Hall that says "Got Evidence?" encourages anyone with tips on his case to come forward.

Prosecutors said Davis shot and killed Coffin in his Buckhead mansion and then set fire to the house to hide the murder. They said Coffin was romantically involved with Davis' estranged wife.

Davis was one of 135 candidates in California's 2003 recall election won by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but dropped out of the race amid news he was a homicide suspect.
