Police charge man with criminal homicide in shooting death

Chattanooga police have charged a 74-year-old man with criminal homicide in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend's 34-year-old son.

Alfred C. Copeland was in police custody after the Monday shooting at 3805 Arrowrock Road that killed Rickey Shell, according to a police department news release.

Copeland told police that he and Shell got into an argument and Shell "became aggressive and advanced toward him in a threatening manner ... he pulled a gun from his pocket and shot Shell twice in the abdomen."

Shell was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
