Chattanooga-based Unum Group posted operating earnings of $218.3 million, or 66 cents per share in the quarter, up from $209.4 million, or 63 cents per share a year ago.
Fourth quarter earnings beat the consensus analyst estimate by 2 cents a share.
The insurer that employs almost 3,000 people in Chattanooga reported fourth quarter net income of $199.4 million, or 60 cents a share, compared to $41.8 million, or 13 cents a share a year ago.
Results include after-tax investment losses of $18.9 million, or 6 cents a share, versus losses of $167.6 million, or 50 cents a share, in 2008, according to Unum.
