Maryville's Rep. McCord to retire from Tennessee House

Republican state Rep. Joe McCord of Maryville, Tenn., says he won't seek re-election to his seat this year.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported late today that McCord has decided against another term to devote more time to his family and work.

McCord first was elected to the House District 8 seat representing parts of Blount and Sevier counties in 1998. He has been major force behind the creation of a caucus of rural Republican members in the House.

McCord said he has found it increasingly difficult to juggle his personal, professional and legislative duties. In a statement he said: "All of those roles have increased in demand over the years and I cannot continue to do them all the justice they deserve, so I must prioritize."

He said he has not endorsed any potential successor for his seat. The filing deadline is April 1.
