She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman LaFayette Paul, artist and teacher, former Hamilton County property assessor and director of the Dale Carnegie Courses.

Well known for her talent, she began teaching professionally at age 11 and never flagged in her enthusiasm for the dance. She graduated from Central High School in 1930 during the Great Depression. When other young women were barely able to complete high school, she earned BA and BS degrees from the University of Chattanooga and an MS in physical education and dance from the University of Wisconsin.

There she studied dance under Margaret H'Doubler and in Chicago and New York was influenced by George Balanchine and Michel Fokine. Locally she was assistant to Miss Inez Hyder. She performed as a member of the Tivoli Ballet and on stage in countless other venues. Mrs. Paul was associate director of the Cotton Ball for over 10 years and choreographed all of the programming.

During her 40-plus year professional career, she taught dance in her own studio and taught physical education in over a dozen public and private schools and institutions in the Chattanooga/Hamilton County area. Among the better known were U.S. Army and Civilian Conservation Corps, Hamilton County Adult Education Programs, Kirkman Vocational, the Frye Institute of Cadek Conservatory, YWCA, City High, Central High, GPS and the University of Chattanooga.

Mrs. Paul was well versed in the history of both Chattanooga and Signal Mountain and became one of the area's more respected and honored citizens. She was a senior member of Union Chapel -- "Little Brown Church" -- of Walden's Ridge, attended Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, served as chaplain of Walden's Ridge Guild, held offices in the S.M. Genealogical Society and was a member of the UDC.

She was mother to Karen Nita Paul Stone (Charles B. III), of Walden, and Don DeForest Paul of Hollywood, Calif., and foster mother to Sylvia Andrade (Antonio) of Sai Paulo, Brazil. She was Vova to four grandchildren, Sherman Paul Stone (Dana), Kristina Lowry Stone Sanders (Joshua London), Mary Catherine Stone Carey (Bruce) and Charles Andrew Stone (Mirna) and to her foster granddaughter, Paula Tonini (Antonio) who was named after her. She leaves her legacy to 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Vova attained her wish to give her body to science.

No immediate services are planned.

An "Accentuate the Positive" party will be held in her honor at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010.

Her wishes were that any gestures of sympathy be directed as contributions to the Friends of Moccasin Bend National Park, P.O. Box 4953, Chattanooga, TN 37405.

She was well known in the community and loved by everyone. She loved her family with all her heart and couldn't be prouder of her sons. Her life revolved around her family. She enjoyed a good joke and loved to play pranks on people. She loved looking over the lake from her house and watching the beautiful sunsets. Her half sister, Connie Brown Hovis, and her half brother, Dale Brown, were bright lights in her life and she loved their visits as well as nieces and nephews being around.

The love of a mother will never die,

We will never forget you, we cannot lie.

You were known as being gentle but at times stern.

That look could make you smile or hide.

We are the people we are because of you.

Your spirit lives in us and shows in what we do,

Your smile and twinkle in your eyes lit up the sun.

You were both strong and gentle yet witty and fun.

Many will miss you, now that you are gone.

You will never be forgotten, your memory will live on.

We will shed tears and feel sorrow,

Today's thoughts and prayers, will get us through the tomorrows.

Go rest and be at peace.

Your pain is now more happiness than any of us can fathom.

We love you Donna very much and you know we will all be together in our own times.
