Joan Blaes

Joan Lois Blaes, 80, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

She was born in Hawthorne, N.J., in 1930 and resided in Lake Worth, Fla., throughout her schooling.

After marrying Gene Blaes in 1956, they lived in St. Louis, Mo.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Milwaukee, Wis.; and Philadelphia, Pa., before moving to Chattanooga in 1965.

Joan had a keen interest in quilting and crafts. She was a longtime member of the Crazy Quilters' Guild and several craft groups in the area. In the 1970s and '80s, she enjoyed displaying and selling her craft items at shows in the greater Chattanooga area and several surrounding states.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Gene; and their four children, Tim (Mikki) Blaes, East Ridge, Chris (Arlene) Blaes, Tulsa, Okla., Adam (Donna) Blaes, Chickamauga, Ga., and Julie (Kurt) Schmissrauter, Chattanooga; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. at OLPH Catholic Church with Father Jim Vick officiating.

Immediately following the Mass, a reception will be held in the Parish Life Center.

Mordeis Cyrelle "M.C." Commander Sr., of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held at graveside today, March 26, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. in Lakewood Memory Garden, East, with the Rev. Dale Troupe officiating.

The family will receive friends today for one hour before service from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Charles Finley, 71, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010, at a local hospital.

Larry Gabel

Larry L. Gabel, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010.

He was born Dec. 29, 1936.

Larry was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a retired master carpenter of more than 50 years and proud member of Heritage Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Ruth Gabel.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maggie Gabel from Tennessee. Intermediate daughters include Sabrina (Austin) Best from Tennessee and Tiffany (Venson) Oliver from Hawaii; son, Jason (Nicole) Gabel from Tennessee. Children from previous marriages include Julie, Oklahoma, Tammy, Florida, Erin, North Carolina, Sam, California, Darryl, Karl, Andre and Larry Gabel, Texas. Grandchildren include Donnie, Katelyn, Hailey, Shelby, Venson and other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Siblings include brothers, Jerry (Gene), Greg (Cathy); and sister, Penny (Frank) McDaniel.

The Rev. Mike Hearrel will conduct the service in Heritage Baptist Church on Saturday, March 27, at 4 p.m.

Melvin Holland

Melvin Freeman Holland, 91, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010, in Chattanooga.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Holland; mother, Bertha Tucker; daughter, Joan West; and grandchildren, Anthony Lebron West and Barbara Ann West.

Survivors include her children, Bertha Mae Congo, Elizabeth Bills and Margaret West, of Chattanooga; devoted granddaughter, Wanda Darlene West and Cherylmaine Stanley; a host of other grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at noon at John P. Franklin Funeral Home with Pastor Walter Lindsey officiating.

Interment in Highland Cemetery.

Gwendolyn Killian

Gwendolyn Parks Killian, 76, of Harrison, beloved wife and mother, entered into the Lord's presence on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

Gwen was a member of Savannah Bay Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Burries G. Parks and Sadie N. Parks; a brother, Donald Parks; and sister, Sue Stegall.

She is survived by her devoted husband, James B. Killian, and children, Teresa Hutcheson, Tim Vincent, James Killian, Edward Killian and Robert Killian. Gwen also leaves two nephews, seven nieces, members of younger generations too numerous to list, and many more who have known and loved her.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today, March 26, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Gene Hooker officiating.

Entombment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Katherine King

Katherine King, 84, of Hixson, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010, in a local health care facility.

A native of Woodbury, Tenn., she had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area and retired from DuPont with more than 30 years of service. Mrs. King was of the Methodist faith, and was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Zada Hunt; three brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include her brother, Carl Hunt of Hixson; sister, Charlsie Bryson, Chickamauga, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Wilton Grimes officiating.

Earl Eugene Klinger, of Chattanooga, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at his home.

Mitchell Raines Sr.

J. Mitchell Raines Sr., 88, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

Retired from Combustion Engineering and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of East Ridge Masonic Lodge and a Shriner, and member of East Ridge Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by a son, Randall Raines.

Survived by wife of 64 years, Irene A. Raines, East Ridge; son, James M. Jr. (Lisa) Raines, Thompson Station, Tenn.; grandson, Jason (Brooke) Raines, Dallas, Texas.

Graveside services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 29, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Janice Rolling

Janice C. Rolling, 81, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

She was born July 7, 1928 in Utica, N.Y., to Ethel T. and Harry J. Colerick. In recent years, she moved from Upstate New York to Matthews, N.C., and then to Soddy-Daisy to be near her daughter's family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Rolling; and son, Jeffrey A. Rolling.

Survivors include her daughter, Marcia R. (Gary) Stevens, of Signal Mountain; son, Calvin B. (Valerie Kushner) Rolling, of Glenville, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Norine F. Rolling, of Lowville, N.Y.; brother Miles H. (Carol) Colerick, of Utica, N.Y.; grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Stevens, of Signal Mountain; Kelly (Ronald) Zaleski, of Norton, Mass.; great-children, Joshua and Michael Zaleski; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Clarence Sowers

Clarence E. Sowers, 63, of Bourbonnais, formerly of Soddy-Daisy, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

Surviving are his daughters, Rachel (Perry) Wofford, of Fredricksburg, Texas, Jennifer (Mark) Mulder, of Dyer, Ind., Stephanie (Jared) Beard, of Bourbonnais; grandchildren, Stephen Wofford, Kayland Wofford and Nicholas Pinkerton, all of Texas, Kaylee Wheeler and Gavin Beard, of Bourbonnais, and Kevin Mulder, of Dyer; sisters, Carolyn Tinsley and Pamela Silvers, all of Georgia; brothers, Jack (Karen) Sowers, David Sowers and Wes Sowers, all of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sowers was employed by ITW Zip Pak in Manteno. He was born Nov. 4, 1946, in Ohio, the son of Robert and Virginia Combs Sowers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1966-1972. While serving in the Navy, he was awarded the second Good Conduct Award for service ending May 31, 1972; the National Defense Service Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; and the Presidential Unit Citation. He enjoyed cooking, watching movies, listening to country music and tinkering with computers.

Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. today in the Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Gross officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery following the funeral service in Georgia.

Jack Stocker

Jack Stocker, 85, died on Tuesday evening, March 23, 2010. His body has been gifted to the University of Tennessee Medical School.

His wife of 65 years, Betty; children, Michael and Susan, Michael's wife, Diane; grandchildren, Michael II, Amanda West and Christopher; Michael II's wife, Sarah, Amanda's husband, Ben, and great-granddaughter, Avery survive him.

He was predeceased by great-grandson, Blake.

Friends and family will celebrate his life at a later date in April.

Flornell "Granny" Taylor, 93, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, March 18, 2010.

Roberta Toney, 73, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010, at a local hospital.

Calvin Weaver

Calvin Augustus Weaver was called home to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the Rohr Nursing Home in Bartow, Fla.

He was born Oct. 12, 1939, in Chattanooga to the late C. Fletcher and Mattie Shropshire Weaver. He was a member of the Howard High School class of 1958. Calvin was a self-employed Building Contractor for many years before suffering a complete stroke in 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Martha Jane Shackleford.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted daughter, Alethea D. Brown, of Nichols, Fla.; son, Terrance (Kimberly) Weaver, of Chattanooga; stepdaughter, Janella Clark, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, TeVarus and Kimoré, of Chattanooga; sister, Gloria B. Jones, of Knoxville, Tenn; uncle, Lee (Willa) Steele, of Columbus, Ohio; a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Geneva White

Geneva Parlee White, 89, was given into the arms of the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

She was a loving daughter of Eagle and Electa Starkey also a devoted wife and mother.

She was actively involved in her children's interests and activities. For many years Geneva and her husband were members of Olive Springs Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga.

She was preceded into the gates of heaven by her husband of 58 years, Russell V. White (1999). Dedicated and life long partners in their marriage and selfless commitment to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Geneva is survived by her children, Roger White (Sharyn) of Grand Prairie, Texas, Annette White, of Lookout Mountain, Ga., Sharon Leopard, of Marietta, Ga. Grandchildren, Russell J. White (Amy), of Mansfield, Texas, Jason White (Kristal), of Dallas, Texas, John D. White (Jacque), of Richardson, Texas, Sarah Glaze (John), of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, John Young, of Snellville, Ga. Great-grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, Joshua and Jessica White, of Mansfield, Texas, Holly Marsh and Rowan Glaze, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

Preceded in death by her parents, Silas and Mattie Thomas Gregory; husband, William "Bud" Alexander; brothers, Collis Gregory, O.C. Gregory, Robert Gregory, Kingley Gregory; sister, Virginia Griswold and Janet Grayson.

Mattie Braden

SOUTH PITTSBURG -- Mattie Lee Braden, 72, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010, in a local hospital.

A lifelong resident of the South Pittsburg area, she was a member of Kimball Tabernacle of Praise.

The daughter of the late Til and Beulah Nunley, she also was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Nunley.

Survivors include a daughter, Marshell (Barry) Knapp; four sisters, Ruth Kirk, Patreiva Hargiss, Opal Hailey and Mary Baugher; grandchildren, Alexis Bohanan, Kat Brizendine and Brandon Bell; four great-grandchildren, Anastasia Hutchins, Keanun Cummings, Alexander Bohanan; Luke Brizendine; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. CDT Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the funeral home chapel with Brother Darrell Nunley and Brother Calvin Nunley officiating.

Audra Collins

WHITWELL -- Audra Virginia Collins went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

On Jan. 10, 1924, a beautiful bright, blue-eyed baby was born to Webb and Mae Tate who preceded her in death. They named her Audra Virginia. Honey became the loving virtuous wife of John Collins. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before he preceded her in death. Their first born son, John Jr. died shortly after birth. John only experienced a few hours of her loving arms until their reunion in Heaven.

Mother was the best and most supportive mom to Sam (Susan) Collins, of Maryland, Linda Ridge, of Hixson, Shirley (Fred) Day, of Signal Mountain and Wanda (William) Dick, of Whitwell. God blessed her with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. We feel blessed that God chose us to be her children.

Audra was also preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Grover, J.P. and Claude Tate; and sisters, Velma Holtcamp and Ethel Frizzell.

Her surviving sisters are Casa Cullip of Florida, Bert Panter of Maryland, Tenn., Sue Mosier of Georgia, and Marion Jo (Bill) Reynolds, Dunlap and Lucille Tate, of Whitwell.

As a member of Cartwright Church of God, Sister Collins taught Sunday school, was YPE Leader was in charge of the youth and children choirs, and drove many many miles to pick up children and others for church. Presently she was a member of Mineral Springs Church of God where God allowed her to be an inspiration at age 86.

Funeral service will be Saturday, March 26, 2010, at noon CDT in the funeral home chapel.

Visitation will be today 4-9 p.m. CDT.

CLEVELAND -- Angel Mae Janie Combs, 36, departed this life Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her father, Billie Combs Sr.; uncle, Ellis Grigsby; aunt, Chloe Combs; and grandparents, Hacker and Juanita Combs. Angel was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her children, Shawn Duble, Ashley Duble, Hunter Morris Bondage, Ellison Mae Bowling; fiance, Chris Bowling, all of Cleveland; parents, Glenna and Clarence Howard, of East Ridge; siblings, Glinda Combs of Chattanooga, Billie (Tonya) Combs Jr., of Florence, Ky. Edna Combs, of Topeka, Kan., Justin (Carla) Combs, of Flintstone; grandmother, Ella Mae Campbell, of Loretta, Tenn.; grandfather, Gordon Grigsby, of Cadillac, Mich.; 16 nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2010 at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Ringgold, Ga.

Family will receive friends after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and Sunday after 2 p.m. and prior to the service Monday at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Ringgold.

Interment will follow in Crestlawn Cemetery.

CLEVELAND -- Melvin "Moose" Gibson, 75, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

ROSSVILLE -- Sue Atkins, 77, died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at her residence.

She retired from Hutcheson Medical Center and was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Atkins.

Survivors include her daughter, Susie Atkins; brother-in-law, Frank Thurman; nieces, Mary Hughes and Carol Land; and several great-nieces and nephews and friends.

TRENTON -- James Ross Kirkpatrick, 91, died Wednesday, March, 24, 2010.

He was a United States Army World War II veteran, he worked for Harman Manufacturing and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Annie Kirkpatrick; daughter, Patricia Adams; and granddaughter, Julie Kirkpatrick.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Gertrude Kirkpatrick; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Linda Kirkpatrick, Fort Oglethorpe, Billy and Mary Kirkpatrick, Trenton; six granddaughters; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; 11 great-grandsons; one great-great-grandson, numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. EDT today in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Mike Hensley officiating.

Alma Shaffner

ROSSVILLE -- Alma Louise "Lou" Shaffner, 84, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

She had lived in the North Georgia area for most of her life and was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Fort Oglethorpe. She had also been a substitute teacher at Rossville High School for many years and enjoyed Oil Painting. She will be remembered most as a caregiver, but most of all as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Pete, Billy and Leland Beard.

Survivors include her loving husband of more than 64 years, Dale Shaffner, of Rossville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Diane Shaffner, of Ringgold, Ga., and Kenneth and Martha Shaffner, of Hixson; sister, Kathleen Stafford, of Popularville, Miss.; four grandchildren, Ian, Kane, Anna and Erin Shaffner; one great-granddaughter, Makayla Roberson; and several nieces and nephews.

Edith Tribble

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Edith Giddens Tribble, 89, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in Trenton, Ga.

Mrs. Tribble was born Aug. 29, 1921, and graduated from Scottsboro High School in Scottsboro, Ala.

Mrs. Edith Tribble, widow of Homer E. Tribble resided in Clarksville, Tenn., from 1969 to 1997 when she returned to her home on Lookout Mountain, Ga. Mrs. Tribble was an active member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star.

She was very talented and won several ceramic awards. She was a member of the Poet's Society and had several poems published.

Survivors are her sister, Zelda Ann Giddens, of Section, Ala.; four brothers, Jack B. Giddens, of Scottsboro, Ala., Elmo L. Giddens, of Lookout Mountain, Ga., Gary F. Giddens, of Lookout Mountain, and James L. Giddens, of Lookout Mountain.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, March 26, 2010 at Wann Funeral Home, at the foot of Lookout Mountain with visitation at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.

EAST POINT -- Eloise "Ella" Wilkey, 64, formerly of Calhoun, Ga., passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2010.

Service at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the Chapel of Willis Funeral Home.

Interment in Gordon Memorial Garden in Calhoun.

FORT PAYNE -- B.A. Burton, 70, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

Survivors include wife, Janet "Shorty" Burton; son, Chris Burton; daughter, Dodi Burton; six grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. CDT Saturday, March 27, from Burt Funeral Home chapel.

Burial will be in Whitehall Cemetery.

Visitation from 4-8 p.m. CDT today at Burt Funeral Home, Fort Payne.
