Detective written up for not wearing ties

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Four homicide detectives who worked on the case that led to a conviction in the murder of a University of Memphis football player have been written up for not wearing ties while in the courtroom for the guilty verdict.

The four were written up the next day after their pictures appeared in The Commercial Appeal.

Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin defends the major who wrote them up, saying he too would have questioned them about not wearing a tie.

The detectives - Sgts. Mundy Quinn, W.D. Merritt and Kevin Lundy and Lt. Mark Miller - were in the courtroom Sunday as the jury found Devin Jefferson guilty in the killing of football player Taylor Bradford.

Godwin says the write-ups are minor and will come out of the officers' files in a year.
