MADISON, Ala. - A new sign marks the historic Pension Row community in Madison, which was settled by Civil War veterans and became a center of the black community.
Madison Mayor Paul Finley said Pension Row was an obvious place for a historic marker. He said placing it was a way to feature the contributions of local residents there.
The community was founded after the Civil War by veterans who had pensions from the federal government. It became the home of most of Madison's black residents.
The placement of the sign was part of the Great Alabama Homecoming project, which seeks to highlight small communities and their connection to Alabama history.
