Motorcyclist dies of wreck injuries

A motorcycle rider injured in an accident Thursday on Walden Avenue has died as a result of his injuries, according to Chattanooga police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.

Javaris Richard, 22, was critically injured after he pulled into the path of a car at the intersection of Walden Avenue and Wilberforce Street around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Weary said. Richard was not wearing a helmet and failed to stop at the stop sign posted at the intersection, she said. The impact of the collision caused him massive head trauma and he passed away late last night following failed attempts to stabilize him, Weary said.

The driver of the vehicle that Richard collided with, 44-year-old James E. Pickett Jr., was arrested on unrelated felony warrants Thursday night, Weary said. He possibly will faces charges in the accident for driving under the influence pending lab results, Weary said.

This is the 21st traffic fatality recorded in the city for the year, she said.
