The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that has left a man and woman dead in Murray County.

Murray County sheriff's deputies returned fire after arriving on the scene of a domestic disturbance at 74 Bahamas Drive late Sunday night, according to GBI special agent in charge Jerry Scott.

Kenneth Green shot and killed his wife, Peggy Sue Green Hamby, and then shot at a deputy, according to the Murray County Sheriff's Department. The deputy returned fire and killed Green, a news release states.

Hamby told a dispatcher her husband was holding a gun on her and threatening to kill her, himself and law enforcement personnel when she called 911 shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the news release.

When deputies arrived four minutes later, Green, who was holding a rifle, was attacking his wife outside their home. The deputy ordered Green to drop the rifle, but Green fired at Hamby, fatally wounding her, the news release states.

Green then turned, moved toward the deputy and fired one shot at the deputy, authorities said. The deputy returned fire and fatally wounded Green, according to the statement.

The GBI now is handling the investigation.
