Collegedale amends library card policy

Collegedale is expanding its library card policy to allow anyone with a permanent address inside or outside Hamilton county to purchase a Collegedale Library card.

"It's the right thing to do for the public," said City Manager Ted Rogers. "It encourages participation and increases revenue for the library."

Whether or not it's "the right thing to do" will be decided by a vote from commissioners at their regularly scheduled Sept. 6 commission meeting. However, the change was officially implemented after being agreed upon by officials at their most recent commission workshop.

Rogers, who proposed the policy change, explained that Collegedale's proximity to Bradley and Catoosa counties often brings people from those counties to the city for recreation, business or work. He also said regional employers like McKee and Volkswagen draw people to Collegedale from counties as far as Rhea and Polk for work.

"If people are using the library, they often either live or work close," he said.

Proof of a permanent address is required and Collegedale non-residents, regardless of which county they live in, will be charged $60 annually for an individual card or $85 annually for a family card.

The commission also agreed to amend the policy to provide a $65 senior family card and extend free family library cards to library staff, city of Collegedale employees and local business owners instead of the individual card they were originally offered.
