Baylor wins four state swim events

KNOXVILLE -- Baylor School won four of the 12 events held Friday evening in the Tennessee State High School Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center, all with times in the top three in the country so far this season.

Baylor boys and girls also had three second places, three thirds, 22 All-American times and 396 combined points, compared to 165 for Bearden and 140 for third-place Montgomery Bell Academy in boys-girls totals.

McCallie's Michael Zuppa won the boys' 50-yard freestyle in the school-record time of 20.95 seconds, shading Baylor's Kevin Thomas in 20.96, and Signal Mountain's Marissa Roth was second to Bearden's Lisa Bogosian in girls' 1-meter diving, with Baylor's Caitlyn Malican and GPS's Mary Portera seventh and eighth.

Baylor won both 200 medley relays. Arden Pitman, Ashley Vance, Ashley Yearwood and Kristen Vredeveld finished in the nation's best time of 1:41.87, and Brian Lee, Spencer Rowe, Evante Gibson and Thomas set a school record of 1:31.60, second best in the United States so far.

Vredeveld set a state record of 22.46 in the girls' 50 free, the nation's top time, and Pitman and Yearwood were second and fourth in the event. Christian Carbone set a Baylor record with the country's third best boys' 200 individual medley, 1:49.20, and teammate Connor King was seventh.

Vance, Hannah Peiffer and Savannah Napier gave Baylor a 2-3-5 finish in the girls' 200 IM, and Michaels was third in the 200 free. Rowe, Gibson and McCallie's Nash Bowen were third through fifth in the boys' 100 butterfly, and Baylor's Annie Kollevoll and Bria Deveaux were fifth and sixth in the girls' 100 fly.

The state meet concludes today.
