Snow leaves some roads "impassable"

The snow has crippled some of the most-trafficked thoroughfares in the area, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol dispatchers.

Monteagle is open with two lanes of travel, but the rest of I-24 has only one lane open. I-75 is also down to one lane, said dispatcher Stacey Boyd.

"We've been out with broken down motorists all night," Boyd said.

Though Chattanooga Public Works employees have been working all night to clear snow, many city roads are still impassable, said Rick Colston, manager of street maintenance. He said he's called in extra workers to drive on 12-hour shifts, putting down salt and sand.

"Thing's aren't looking good at all. We're just trying to cut a path through main thoroughfares. There's no telling when we'll have it clear, but we're just really going to stay at it."
