Hamilton school board members reject talk of bonuses

A motion to discuss the previously tabled issue of one-time bonuses for all school system employees failed to make it on to tonight's Hamilton County school board agenda.

Before the meeting officially began, board members voted 5-3 to not discuss the $400 and $500 bonuses.

Board member Jeffrey Wilson, who first made the motion to discuss the bonuses tonight, said he wanted the board to consider the bonuses at an upcoming work session.

Most of the $2.5 million cost of the bonuses was left over from a federal jobs stimulus package. Because that money only can be used for classroom-based expenses, Superintendent Jim Scales had suggested taking $350,000 from the general purpose budget to give bonuses to classified employees.
